With today’s ever-increasing electricity prices, new homeowners are more informed and energy conscious than a few years ago. We’ve seen an increased interest in having sustainable green living and smart technology integrated into their homes. Year after year, new technologies are continually changing the way homes are designed and built for optimal performance.
To complement this Mitsubishi Electric provide a multi head split system air conditioner as an alternative to the tradtional ducted system.
The Mitsubishi Electric MXZ and PUMY series outdoor units allows the connection of multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit.
The MXZ series features 2 to 6 multi-port outdoor units from 5.2kW up to 12kW capacity while the PUMY series is part of the CITY MULTI Variable Flow Refrigerant class with capacities up to 22kW. The PUMY series outdoor is a truly diverse unit, with a selection of 27 different styles of indoor models and with multiple capacities available.
In a conventional single split ducted system there is 1 pair of refrigeration copper pipe connections between an indoor and outdoor unit. With the MXZ series outdoor unit from 2 up to 6 pairs of refrigeration connections can be connected to a single outdoor unit.
OUTDOOR MODEL | TOTAL COOLING CAPACITY |
TOTAL HEATING CAPACITY |
---|---|---|
MXZ-2E52VAD2 | 5.2 kW | 6.1 kW |
MXZ-3E54VAD2 | 5.4 kW | 7.0 kW |
MXZ-4E71VAD2 | 7.1 kW | 8.0 kW |
MXZ-4E80VAD2 | 8.0 kW | 8.8 kW |
MXZ-5E100VAD2 | 10.0 kW | 10.0 kW |
MXZ-6E120VAD2 | 12.0 kW | 13.2 kW |
Alternatively, there is the PUMY CITY MULTI VRV series. Unlike the MXZ Series with multiple connections to the outdoor unit, the PUMY Series features just one refrigeration connection. This is connected from the outdoor unit to a multi-port branch box within your ceiling space or optionally to an external enclosure. Multiple refrigeration connections are connected to the branch box to indoor units.
With multiple branch boxes and junctions up to 12 indoor units can be connected and operated simultaneously depending on capacity requirements, with a selection of different types of indoor units from wall mounted to ceiling cassette and more. This means you can design an air conditioning system to suit many unique individual applications.

With these systems Mitsubishi Electric provide total energy efficiency, performance and control to home cooling and heating usually only found in large commercial applications. They are perfect for any situation, from a few rooms through to a whole-home renovation. These sophisticated systems give you more control over the temperatures in your home and do it better than ducted air conditioning. How?
Conventional ducted systems force a large volume of air through long duct runs and usually only one standard return air filter.
With a multi-split ductless system, you get sophisticated filtration at every room or area to reduce contaminants such as allergens, viruses, and bacteria from the air. This combination of filters provides a healthier breathing environment for the home and higher indoor air quality.
With a single ducted system, you would traditionally have only one set thermostat at the return air to control and set the temperature for the entire home.
In comparison, with a ductless multi-split system, all indoor systems detect temperature fluctuations within each zone it is installed in and automatically adjusts performance for ultimate comfort in any room. All indoor models feature a return air sensor that constantly monitors and maintains room temperature.
With a ducted system you would have static outlets fitted to each room that if provided can be manually adjusted.
But a multi-split system each indoor unit can move and adjust the airflow automatically through vertical and horizontal vanes for greater conditioned air circulation. All controlled by microprocessor technology within the indoor unit. This means better airflow distribution and balance, greater temperature, and moisture control, and the ultimate in personalised comfort.
While a ducted system is able to be zoned to simply turn off airflow into various rooms the overall capacity of the system remains the same.
A ductless multi-split system can provide you with ideal levels of comfort you use most while reducing energy costs. Everyone in different rooms — like the kitchen, master bedroom or living room — can set temperatures and timing controls for their own personalised comfort. Temperature set points are maintained throughout the day regardless of heat load changes in other areas of the home. Plus, if they aren’t home or only occupying one or two rooms at a time, they can turn off the other rooms, reducing total capacity required and saving money in energy costs.
Ducted air systems require large fan coil units to push air long distances through bulky ductwork. This ductwork often runs through unhealthy, unconditioned ceiling spaces. The average energy lost through central ductwork is 20-30% and even more when ductwork is designed and installed with little care. The time taken to test ducting, seal leak spots, retest and seal again is a time consuming and costly process. Besides the power required to run the larger fan coil, the ductwork itself can have a limited distribution of capacity throughout a home.
Refrigerant cycles through small sealed evacuated insulated copper pipes, distributing capacity effortlessly to each zone. With smaller capacity indoor units to deliver the conditioned air to each zone more efficiently with little to no energy loss. Because of lower heating and cooling loads this leads to smaller and more efficient HVAC systems with tailored comfort and the added bonus of advanced, superior control.
Every multi-split ductless system we estimate is designed using Mitsubishi Electric's own proprietary design tool software provided by their Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Works in Japan.
This software is a layout and system selection tool for Variable Refrigerant Flow systems that can ensure line lengths, capacities and control schemes are within requirements.
Designing and commissioning a multi-split system is a complex process and this software eliminates any guesswork, generating diagrams to streamline the installation process and providing a custom built system that is unique to our customers individual circumstances.
